You can do ISCSI for free in linux ... ISCSI Enterprise Target is an example. Buy a cheap small footprint desktop with enough space for 4 drives hooked to some form of RAID with the ISCSI service running on top and bam.... basic SAN device. Could always run NFS/SMB in addition
