World Tour - Fast Approaching
Contributed by Justin on 7/28/08 7:03PM

A little more than a month and a half until World Tour. Current destination stops:

  • Wellington, New Zealand - visting Bill, err, Will...eh whatever, I'm still calling him Bill
  • Sydney, Australia - renting a car and driving down the coast
  • Singapore, Singapore - visiting Evan, hopefully he'll be there
  • Munich, Germany - Oktoberfest here we come (with our Audi A3)
Gearing up to take a lot of pictures. I'll have my trusty Nikon D70 with a 12-24mm wide angle lens and my super awesome 18-200mm lens. I'm thinking of getting an f/1.4 50mm prime lens (they also make a much cheaper f/1.8 50mm) for some night shots, but I'm going back and forth on whether it would be worth it. I also don't have a good tripod. I wasn't planning on bringing one, but on the other hand, I don't want to miss out on any good shots. I've got a crappy one I bought at Ritz Camera which will be *ok*, but it definitely isn't compact or light. I've got a nice bogen-manfrotto tripod on my Amazon wishlist, but it's about $300. poo.

Anyone who has a nice digital camera want to leave you thoughts?

if you're not getting a tripod, you should get a monopod: you need something. also, if you're getting whack lenses, you need a good case, so be sure to price/spec that first. if you get a camera, it seems like you should go all the way..

John is the final athority on this but he loves 50 mm lenses. I know he has a f/1.2 and f/1.8. He could probably even tell you model numbers. Although they are pretty old I know for a fact that they work on newer Nikons. As for lugging the tripod; have you considered a monopod? It can double as a hiking stick, most collapse pretty small, and it will be way lighter. They range from $40 to $90 (for carbo fiber) on B&H Photo's webpage. That's my two cents.

By the way, your site won't let me change my username, yet mysteriously it puts my username in and editable text box :)

Never underestimate the power of tripods :)

I have this one and I love it:

Only $115 :)

Just remember that you will, at some point, have to carry all the shit that you bring, and sometimes all at once. As long as you factor in the weight, I say get the tripod :)
